Georgian restaurant part 2, so the verb to want

Georgian restaurant is often the first contact with Georgian culture and language. This is also the place where we are left alone with menu and the waiter. So today, let’s learn the useful verb and some phrases!

This article is the continuation of the first post about Georgian restaurant, which you may read here. You’ll find there several useful words as well as the verbs „to eat” and „to drink”. This time we’ll add to your Georgian repertoire the verb „to want” and additional helpful words.

How does the verb "to want" conjugate?

The verb „to want”, so ნდომა in Georgian, in present tense conjugates as follows:

(ის) მე მინდა

(ის) შენ გინდა

(ის) მას უნდა

(ის) ჩვენ გვინდა

(ის) თქვენ გინდათ

(ის) მათ უნდათ

As you may have already noticed this verb conjugates in a objective way. It means that the person who wants something is in the 3rd case and something or someone we want remains in the 1st case. Please keep in mind, this is the conjugation for the form to want something/someone, so the 3rd person. The forms: I want you, you want me etc. is not covered in this post. The separate post about the 3rd case we will soon published as well. You may subscribe to The Caucasian Mail not to miss it.

What you may additionally learn from this verb is the conjugation pattern – one of the 2 typical for the objective conjugation. By this, I mean the markers მი-, გი-, უ- and so on, i.e. all the letters before the root of the verb (-ნდ). You’ll see those in many other verbs. This is also an easy way to recognize the conjugation of the verb.

How to use the verb "to want" in Georgian?

Let’s then look at the example sentence with this verb. If you want to say „I want bread” it will look like this: პური მინდა. If „he wants bread” it we’ll say it as follows: მას პური უნდა.

The same rules apply to the questions you want to ask with this verb:

What do you want? – რა გინდა?

Who wants (something)? –  ვის უნდა?

What is left in this mini lesson is to look at few additional sentences that may be useful in the Georgian restaurant. All those you can use with our verb to want.

თავისუფალი მაგიდა – free table
