How to say „What do you do?” in Georgian?

“What do you do?” in Georgian can be an opening question for many conversations, so it’s worthy to remember it. Here you will learn how to conjugate the verb “to do” in present tense and create sentences with it.

There are not that many phrases with the word “to do” as in for example in English. However, it is still quite useful as an universal verb for several activities (in case you e.g. forget other words). The good news for all student of Georgian language is that the verb is a regular one. As a result, knowing few conjugation rules, you may use this one easily as well. Other way round, if you remember this verb, it’s conjugation rules will help you in learning next ones faster.

How to conjugate the verb “to do” in present tense?

Let’s start with the easier part, the infinitive form. “To do” in Georgian is გაკეთება. The infinitive form gives you already two useful pieces of information. Firstly, you may have noticed, there is a გა– prefix. This one you will use in future and aorist tenses among others. Secondly, the last letters are ება. If you see other verbs with that ending, there are high chances that their conjugation will be the same.

Let’s go then to see its conjugation in present tense:


მე ვაკეთებ

შენ აკეთებ

ის აკეთებს

ჩვენ ვაკეთებთ

თქვენ აკეთებთ

ისინი აკეთებენ

As you might have noticed, the conjugation itself is quite simple. Additionally, cases-wise there will be no complex challenges. How to say „I do..." in Georgian?

The verb conjugation is a part of the success. What you are missing to create a full sentences are the cases. Contrary to English, each verbs subject and objects are declined in some cases. As a result, the thing you “do” will stay in 3rd case in Georgian. The illustrative sentence will look like this

მე საშინაო დავალებას ვაკეთებ. – I do homework.

The phrase homework (საშინაო დავალება) is declined in 3rd case here. The subject, person conducting the action, stays in the 1st case.

How to ask “What do you do?” in Georgian?

Knowing already the conjugation and the necessary cases, let’s move to the questions. All you need here additionally is the word „რა” (what), but in 3rd case – რას. As the answer will be in 3rd case, the question should follow this pattern.

The whole sentence will be as follows:

რას აკეთებ?

It may be just a short question or one may add to it additional pieces of information, e.g. “today”, “in evening” or “in Georgia”. There are many options, however each time the main phrase will stay the same. If you learn it now, it will be beneficial in many future discussions.

Since we are talking about the questions, you may hear (or ask) this one as well: Who does (something)? So without adding additional knowledge you just say:

ვინ აკეთებს…?

Please remember that still the thing that this person does will be in the 3rd case, e.g.:

ვინ აკეთებს საშინაო დავალებას? – Who does the homework?
