If you cannot understand Georgian verbs, their conjugation, endings etc. this article is for you! We analyze here active and middle voice of Georgian verb in present tense.<\/p>

Georgian verbs may give you an impression they are hard to learn and illogical, but those appearances are a bit deceptive. Besides that big group of irregular verbs, the rest can be grouped. Today we\u2019ll focus on the active voice verbs and middle voice verbs (not the passive voice verbs though) \u2013 the ones who have so called v- marker. What the middle voice is in Georgian we\u2019ll be talking more in a separate post. However this level of grammatical terms and knowledge is more useful on intermediate levels or higher. What is v- verbs group and so called v- marker?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

One of the ways to distinguish groups of verbs in Georgian by the foreigners is to divide them into those who have \u10d5<\/strong>– letter in the 1st<\/sup> person singular (in present) and those which have \u10db<\/strong>-. The examples of Georgian verb in present tense representing the first group are like this:<\/p>

To do<\/a>: \u10d2\u10d0\u10d9\u10d4\u10d7\u10d4\u10d1\u10d0 – \u10db\u10d4 \u10d5\u10d0\u10d9\u10d4\u10d7\u10d4\u10d1<\/strong><\/p>

To work: \u10db\u10e3\u10e8\u10d0\u10dd\u10d1\u10d0 – \u10db\u10d4 \u10d5\u10db\u10e3\u10e8\u10d0\u10dd\u10d1<\/strong><\/p>

To study: \u10e1\u10ec\u10d0\u10d5\u10da\u10d0 – \u10db\u10d4 \u10d5\u10e1\u10ec\u10d0\u10d5\u10da\u10dd\u10d1<\/strong><\/p>

To play (an instrument): \u10d3\u10d0\u10d9\u10d5\u10e0\u10d0 – \u10db\u10d4 \u10d5\u10e3\u10d9\u10e0\u10d0\u10d5<\/strong><\/p>

You may notice that those verbs have two things in common. Firstly, all of them have \u10d5<\/strong>– marker. Secondly, all of them in this form end with the consonant. To be more precise the above mentioned verbs represent 3 subgroups: the ones ending with –\u10dd\u10d1<\/strong>, –\u10d4\u10d1<\/strong> and –\u10d0\u10d5<\/strong>.<\/p>

If you are wondering now, why we separate them then, the answer is quite simple. Their forms slightly differ in other tenses, so it\u2019s much easier to distinguish them<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
