Each talk in Georgian starts with a friendly \u201cHow are you doing?\u201d. This is the basis of social interactions, so even if you do not know more phrases, this is the one worth learning.<\/p>

One may compare it a bit with English question „How are you?\u201d, because often you will hear the answer \u201cfine\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m good\u201d. Very rarely you will hear \u201cso-so\u201d or \u201cbad\u201d. If that\u2019s the answer, it may be a pretty bad situation.<\/p>

By reading this article you will learn not only how to ask the above question in Georgian (or understand it, if being asked), but also how to answer it. Remember that the role of this question may be different that in your own culture. In Georgia one normally uses it as a starter for any small-talk. The best will be to start with the question itself. In Georgian language it will be \u10e0\u10dd\u10d2\u10dd\u10e0 \u10ee\u10d0\u10e0<\/strong>? (rogor khar) \u2013 How are you? In Georgian (and it’s good news) you read words exactly as they are written. So if you know a bit of alphabet, you can read it as well.\u00a0<\/p>

Literally the same. If you are in a formal situation and you address someone by Sir\/Madam, the question will be changed into: \u10e0\u10dd\u10d2\u10dd\u10e0 \u10ee\u10d0\u10e0\u10d7<\/strong>? (rogor khart). This is exactly the same question, but asked using 2nd<\/sup> person plural (you) which we use for addressing Sir\/Madam as well.<\/p>

The second question may be used also if one addresses more that just one person, i.e. „you” plural. Here it does not matter, if we have familiar or formal relation with those people. The form will be the same.<\/p>

There is an additional version of this question. You may hear it especially in speaking, not in writing. That is why we\u2019ll cover it here today so you won\u2019t be surprised during your first conversations. So it is: \u10e0\u10dd\u10d2\u10dd\u10e0\u10d0 \u10ee\u10d0\u10e0<\/strong>? (rogor khar) It means exactly the same as \u10e0\u10dd\u10d2\u10dd\u10e0 \u10ee\u10d0\u10e0? <\/strong>(rogora khar). The added letter \u201c\u10d0<\/strong>\u201d(a) may be added to the word if it end on voiced consonant and the next word also starts with one. The reason one adds it is to have a better melody of the sentence.<\/p>

Once you have been asked about it, it is polite to answer, isn\u2019t it? The easiest form is to to say \u10d9\u10d0\u10e0\u10d2\u10d0\u10d3 (k’argad)<\/strong>, which means \u201cwell\u201d. That\u2019s the option especially for your first holidays in Georgia, when you accustom to the Georgian language. Later, during your trip you may answer in full sentence:<\/p>

\u10db\u10d4 \u10d9\u10d0\u10e0\u10d2\u10d0\u10d3 \u10d5\u10d0\u10e0<\/strong> – I am well (me k’argad var)<\/p>

Or in a more standard way (in Georgian language one often skips personal pronouns):<\/p>

\u10d9\u10d0\u10e0\u10d2\u10d0\u10d3 \u10d5\u10d0\u10e0<\/strong> – (I) am well.\u00a0 (k’argad var)<\/p>

Having said that, you may politely add \u10db\u10d0\u10d3\u10da\u10dd\u10d1\u10d0<\/strong> (madloba) in the end, which means \u201cThanks\u201d. This is a neutral form that is used in standard conversations in bus, market or other daily life situations. The alternative is\u00a0 \u10d2\u10db\u10d0\u10d3\u10da\u10dd\u10d1<\/strong> (gmadlob) – Thank you. Here you address the other person directly in a non-formal speech. This \u201cyou\u201d is a singular. The formal form (addressing by Sir\/Madam) will be \u10d2\u10db\u10d0\u10d3\u10da\u10dd\u10d1\u10d7 (gmadlobt)<\/strong>.<\/p>

You may go even further with your conversation and ask the interlocutor, how they are. This is the easiest part in this whole small-talk in Georgian You just say \u10e8\u10d4\u10dc<\/strong>? (shen) \u2013 and you? or \u00a0\u10d7\u10e5\u10d5\u10d4\u10dc<\/strong>? (tkven) \u2013 and you? For plural or formal questions. Please do remember that this form may be used only if the main question has been already asked by the other person.
